Most birders who visit Thailand have a wish list of top birds they would like to see. I too have a few birds that I would really like to see and photograph.
However I seldom travel outside Phetchabun Province for my hobby, so despite some excellent local birding opportunities, I am unlikely to see birds like a Spoon-billed Sandpiper or Nordmann’s Greenshank.
That said there are still plenty of birds here in Phetchabun that would probably feature on a list of top birds for Thailand. Both Nam Nao and Tat Mok national parks are home to some of them and given that these parks are not visited by many birders who knows what they may hold.
The following is a list of my top birds for 2019. I shall add to it if I discover any more noteworthy species this year. All the birds were recorded in the Phetchabun National Parks I visit.
- Eared Pitta
- Wreathed Hornbill
- Blue Pitta
- Silver Pheasant
- Siamese Fireback
- Common Green Magpie
- Slaty-backed Forktail
- Green Peafowl
If you would like to join me on one of my regular birding trips to these parks please read this article.
Now I have a question for you. If you were visiting Thailand on a birding holiday what would be on your top birds list? If you have a few minutes please let me know using this contact form. If I get enough responses I will publish a post on the subject:
